CCC instruction encompasses intrapersonal competencies such as self-efficacy, self-regulation, and perseverance and interpersonal competencies such as conflict management, assertiveness, and empathy. This eight-part webinar series, Sustaining CCC Instruction, is a collaborative effort between KSDE and the CCC Framework.
PREPARING FOR INTRA- AND INTERPERSONAL COMPETENCY INSTRUCTION
This video describes how a school or district should prepare for implementing competency instruction. Part 1 of the 20-minute video suggests several ways to facilitate discussions among administrators, teacher leaders, and teachers to target where to begin and get educator input and buy-in. Part 2 of the video describes how to prepare our staff to participate in professional development. When we do this, it helps educator self-efficacy, or belief in themselves to learn and teach the content. The video shares several examples of things you could do in advance, such as teacher implementation and impact videos, overview videos, and exploration resources. Part 3 of the video discusses in detail how to plan competency instruction, such as identifying when and where assessments and instruction will occur. It addresses the practical details of how to get social-emotional learning (SEL) instruction to every student in a way that makes sense. This level of coordination and communication is essential to implementing and sustaining SEL efforts.
TRAINING EDUCATORS TO PROVIDE COMPETENCY INSTRUCTION AND PRACTICE OPPORTUNITIES
This 13-minute video describes what constitutes high-quality professional development, using the College & Career Competency training series as an example. The first part of the video suggests using the Observation Checklist for High Quality Professional Development to understand specific indicators that should be included in teacher training. The next part of the video provides specific examples of what should be included/addressed in training to make it effective. Whatever SEL curriculum you adopt or are working with, providing high-quality training will help your staff learn, implement, and sustain efforts related to SEL instruction.
COACHING EDUCATORS TO PROVIDE COMPETENCY INSTRUCTION AND PRACTICE OPPORTUNITIES
This video describes what coaching for teachers can look like and how we can provide this given our sometimes limited resources and staff. The 15-minute video addresses how coaching can be provided to educators in conjunction with training, using the CCC training series as an example. It describes six critical behaviors that should be demonstrated in any coaching event. The last part of the video summarizes the coaching that occurs as part of the CCC Framework professional development across the year, providing a timeline, a group coaching structure, and a quality coaching observation checklist.
SUPPORTING EDUCATORS IN EMBEDDING INTRA- AND INTERPERSONAL COMPETENCY PRACTICE OPPORTUNITIES
This video describes what providing explicit instruction and authentic practice for students can look like and how we can support this—the true embedding of intra- and interpersonal competency instruction in day-to-day classroom activities. The CCC Framework practice elements described serve as an example of what could occur in conjunction with any SEL curriculum. This 19-minute video addresses first how we can provide instructional activities to students in a systematic way so that we make sure every student learns the key concepts. Then, it gives numerous examples of providing authentic practice. Finally, the video shares how providing collaboration time will help your staff learn, implement, and sustain efforts related to SEL instruction.
PROMOTING AND EVALUATING IMPLEMENTATION OF COMPETENCY INSTRUCTION
This video describes fidelity, including how it applies to SEL efforts and how we can support it in our educational role. Implementation fidelity refers to the degree to which an intervention or program is delivered as intended—so not just the curriculum but all the processes associated with it. Only by understanding and measuring whether an intervention has been implemented with fidelity can we gain a better understanding of how and why an intervention works and the extent to which outcomes can be improved. This 15-minute video explores how we make sure that we implement SEL curricula with fidelity. We consider first how we can evaluate our teaching of the curricula and then move to process fidelity, such as how we collect and analyze SEL data systematically. The video concludes with three strategies that promote fidelity to data collection.
MONITORING STUDENT PROGRESS IN DEVELOPING INTRA- AND INTERPERSONAL COMPETENCIES
This video describes how student data should be collected, analyzed, and discussed to help us and students improve, and then sustain our efforts in promoting students’ development. The CCC Framework measures and assessment site described, https://www.cccstudent.org/, serves as an example of what could occur in conjunction with any SEL curriculum. This 13-minute video explores numerous formative methods to measure students’ growth in intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. These include student assessment of perceptions, knowledge, skills, application, and outcomes.
ENGAGING FAMILIES AND OTHER KEY STAKEHOLDERS IN COMPETENCY DEVELOPMENT
This video describes the importance of engaging families in competency development and provides examples of ways schools have engaged families in competency instruction. Social-emotional learning is best addressed when we involve families in the conversation and are clear and transparent about how we are helping their child be successful. The College and Career Competency Framework provides numerous resources, such as Tip Sheets, Family Guidance Modules, and training for families, that can be utilized to increase family–school partnerships.
COLLEGE & CAREER COMPETENCY FRAMEWORK IMPLEMENTATION ROADMAP—SUSTAINING AND MAINTAINING COMPETENCY INSTRUCTION EFFORTS
This video describes the CCC Framework Implementation Roadmap, a tool for planning, implementing, and sustaining schoolwide competency instruction. Overarching questions addressed in the video include: How can we make sure as an SEL team or leadership team that we are on track? Are we doing it as intended? How can we plan for next year’s implementation? This 9-minute video features the CCC Framework Implementation Roadmap, which will guide your leadership team to quality implementation. It contains some indicators specifically for leadership, and some are related to all staff. At the end, there is a timeline of what happens when across the school year.
